Not hardly! But on the other hand, if you want to get from
Brookings to the Pacific Ocean, you do have to travel south.
It's the
truth! And it's also the main reason the Port of Brookings-Harbor is
known as one of the safest small craft harbors in the entire Pacific
Northwest. Just check out a map and you'll see that this neat little strip
of Oregon's coast is located on a quiet little bay fed by the Chetco River which
literally flows straight south into the Pacific.
There are a lot of days when
the wind whips up the ocean into a frenzy of white-caps both north and south of
our fair community and yet our little patch of ocean is as calm and as peaceful
as an inland lake. This reduced wave action combined with regularly
scheduled dredging also helps to control the sandbar build-up so common to the
mouths of rivers up 
and down the coast.
Check it out! Whether you're a
recreational boater or a fishing enthusiast or someone who just likes the
atmosphere, you'll find that Brookings-Harbor is one of the most user-friendly
ports on the coast.
And talk about the ocean and river fishing! You can
go on your own or join up with a guide or a charter boat. Depending on the
time and place, you'll find salmon and steelhead and ling cod and perch
and... The list goes on with even some unconfirmed reports of an
occasional mermaid or two.
When you get back on land, you'll find restaurants
and neat little shops loaded with goodies and a boardwalk where you can stroll
or just sit and watch it all.
Pretty good place! It's like the wording I
saw on a bumper sticker the other day:
"IF
YOU'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE ON THE BEACH ~ YOU'RE LUCKY
ENOUGH!"
